Rezumat / Summary: Nicolae Gane’s Zile trăite can be read as a discourse of cultural memory in which personal experience is narratively integrated into the collective history of modern Romania. Drawing on Maurice Halbwachs’s notion of social frameworks of memory and Jan Assmann’s distinction between cultural and communicative memory, the study shows how Nicolae Gane transforms autobiographical recollection into a mechanism of identity formation and moral education. Key episodes – such as the Union celebration of 1902, Alexandru Ioan Cuza’s visit to Dorohoi, and the separatist uprising in Iași – are not only recounted but symbolically reinterpreted to reinforce national values and legitimize the emerging state. The text also contributes to the cultural memory of the Junimea circle and highlights Nicolae Gane’s admiration for political figures like Ion C. Brătianu. Overall, Zile trăite functions as a medium through which the past is reactivated, evaluated, and transmitted to future generations.
