Rezumat / Summary: There is still much to uncover about nineteenth and twenty-century women artists in our local history, in some cases with strong educational and professional connections with Western centres (Munich, Vienna, Paris). This paper addresses the mechanisms of erasure from art history and covers the process of restoring the identity of Sonja Nădejde (born Sofia Nădejde, 1876-1947), overcoming the silencing of many other women artists excluded from grand narratives. New research into her biography and practice offers testimony to the gender disparities and deliberate omissions that have fuelled traditional ways of writing art history.
