Rezumat / Summary: The beginning of the 20th century finds the theatre of Iași completely unprepared to accept or test the scenographic currents present in the European theatres. The lack of specially trained stage directors, as well as the theater management’s avoidance of searching for solutions to develop the image scenery, extends almost to the third decade. Taking advantage of the fact that the theater’s storage areas were full of costumes and stage decorations brought for the opening of 1896, savings are made by modifying and using them in almost all the productions of that period. The decorative painter is no longer a creator; he only modifies and maintains hundreds of meters of canvas painted in the ‟tromp lʼoeil” style. Becoming a simple stage painter, his name is no longer known to the public. He regains his specific place in the theater show only in 1929. The scenographerʼs duties begin to be divided between the stage director and the decorative painter. Aurel Ion Maican, Ion Sava, G.M. Zamfirescu, Theodor Kiriacoff, Adalbert Wilke will bring along with their artistic visions, changes in the stage techniques, realigning the theatre space of Iași to those concerned with the theatricalization of the stage image.
